We always tell our students, that swiping that credit card for the purchase of your Glock 19x is just the beginning!! Practice is of utmost importance to becoming a responsible armed citizen. Ensuring that you are effective with your firearm will only happen with consistent training. We’ve all heard of the myriad of live fire drills and the importance of dry-firing techniques. But what exactly are holding drills? The precursor to dry-fire drills and practice are holding drills. These drills can also be transitioned to live fire once you’ve got the hang of it. Holding drills will undoubtedly aid in developing muscle memory.
What we want you to do is take your pistol, ensure that is safe (clear of any live ammo), get a good intense grip on the pistol, and dry-fire one shot (ensuring you follow all fundamentals of pistol shooting). Once this is done, hold your position. Don’t move a muscle!! We want you to hold this for about 45 seconds to 1 minute. Again, we don’t want you to move a muscle. Normally what our bodies want to do is relieve the stress on particular muscles, by augmenting other muscle tensions. Avoid this. Hold your position. Once you have held that position for 45 seconds to 1 minute, relax. Put the gun down, let the blood flow for about 2 minutes. Then repeat. You should do about 6-8 iterations of this a day, for at least 5 days a week.
It seems easy enough, but by the 7th or 8th iteration, trust us you will most definitely feel it!!! This will improve on your muscle memory, aid in grip techniques, and start your dry-fire practicing regimen on the right track!! Remember guys….shooting is most definitely a perishable skill. Perfect practice develops perfect shooting motions.
