As if this storm wasn’t bad enough, the power is out and it’s pitch black inside of your home. Luckily the wife and kids are out of town visiting the in-laws. You get ready to settle down for the night, as there is not much else to do, and there’s a knock at the door. It’s strange because it’s the middle of the worst storm in years. You grab your Legion 229 and head towards the door. You get there and no-one is there. Your heart starts pounding and your awareness levels are now at a bright orange…..
There are several options for responsible armed citizens that want to augment their shooting capabilities at night or in low light situations. The top picture is a perfect example of night-sights mounted on a pistol. These sights have tritium inserts which help shooters aim in extremely low light situations. Tritium is actually a naturally occurring radioactive isotope of hydrogen, that when generically produced can be used in watches, instruments and even……yes you guessed it firearm sights!!!! These sights are easily tracked in the lowest of light conditions. In daylight conditions they appear to be your normal white-dot sights. Several brand-makers offer these as aftermarket options and you can find them on most suppliers websites.
Other low-light options include flashlights and laser modules. Although these are mostly used on rifles like the AR platforms used for self-defense, most modern pistols come with rails dedicated for flashlights and/or lasers. These additions make pistols harder to conceal, but for home defensive situations these options may be perfect. Understand what your needs are and take it from there guys. Our Ruger AR-556 is one of our home defense rifles and we have a laser and light combo from UTG mounted at the 6 o’clock position.
****If night sights are your flavor and you have to install them on your pistol, we strongly suggest that you seek a qualified gunsmith as these have to be installed with precise movements. Most laser/light combos are easy enough to install at home with little or no tools needed. If you are ever unsure, don’t hesitate to seek competent guidance.****
*** If you are unfamiliar with firearms and/or their accessories, and want to learn more, PSA strongly suggests that you find, enroll, and attend a comprehensive and reputable firearms safety course. Firearms safety is all of OUR responsibility.
