Poor, poor revolvers…..always being slighted, mistreated, and abused!!! It’s gotten so bad that we were thinking about starting a petition to get revolver-bullying classified as a felony!!!! Seriously though guys, its high time that we all have some, and display some revolver etiquette!! After all…wheel guns are some of the most venerable firearm platforms around. If you’ve never heard of “Cowboying” a revolver, this post will definitely inform you!!!!! And hopefully by the end we can eradicate “Revolver Bullying!!!”
You’ve got the cylinder open and you take a good spin like they do in the cowboy movies. With one flick of the wrist you slam the cylinder back into place. Wyatt Earp would be jealous at how bad-ass you just looked!!! Little did you know you just broke one of the most important mechanisms of your wheel-gun. “Cowboying” a revolver is one of the most damaging things we can do to our revolver. Yeah….it may look cool, but what are you really doing to the firearm?
If you take a look at this open action on our Taurus Judge, you will notice a small locking pin near the rear of the cylinder housing. Slamming the cylinder closed will most definitely damage this locking mechanism and render the revolver unusable for anything but a paper weight. When you close a revolver you should take care of not slamming the cylinder into it’s housing. You should use only minimal force against the crane of the revolver to close the cylinder and then index it by hand. That’s all it takes and you’re ready for action.
