We sincerely hope that you guys remain safe during this holiday season!! So many times, you wacky shooters have read on our blog about being aware of your environment. One of the most influential characters in the movie that is the history of firearms is Col. Jeff Cooper. Many moons ago, Col. Cooper developed his “4-Conditions of Awareness,” which are still taught throughout the firearms community to this day. At PSA, we like to give you guys our own spin on the classics!!!
PSA instructors teach the following Conditions of Awareness:
- Green – Condition green are the times in which you have the lowest level of awareness throughout your day. In this condition you feel as safe as a bug in a rug. You’re sitting at home with the wife…the fireplace is going and you two love birds are watching a romantic comedy. Not a care in the world…..
- Yellow – As you leave out in the morning for work, its time that you up your level of awareness. We want you to relax yourself, but at the same time we want you to be alert. A condition yellow level of awareness is suggested at ALL times when you are out in public.
- Orange – You notice that it’s time to get some gas, so you pull into the 7-11 service station and prepare to get out and pay. As you get out, you notice an unscrupulous character in the distance approaching in a mask. It’s time to switch your awareness levels to orange. In this condition you have identified a specific threat and are preparing to take some sort of action (flee or stand-and-fight).
- Red – Unfortunately the perpetrator was faster than you thought and he was on you before you could flee. You’re now in condition red and ready for action. Things have quickly turned south and quite possibly physical. It’s go time!
Understanding conditions of awareness may very well help you be better prepared to face a potential threat. As you go about your day-to-day rest assured that the bad guy is prepared with his/her own conditions of awareness.
*** If you are unfamiliar with firearms and/or their accessories, and want to learn more, PSA strongly suggests that you find, enroll, and attend a comprehensive and reputable firearms safety course. Firearms safety is all of OUR responsibility.
We want to thank you for taking out the time to stop by our lane at the shooting range!! We truly hope that we were able to hit the target, and if you ever have any questions please don’t hesitate to shoot them our way!! We look forward to shooting the breeze with you soon again!!
And as always….remember to watch your six and stay low!!!
