Plainly put, one of PSA’s most adored calibers is the .22 cartridge!!  Although this may come as a shock to many of you wacky shooters, we at PSA feel like a day at the range with an ammo can full of .22LR ammo is a day (and several hundred shell casings for that matter!!!) well spent!  Although this round doesn’t pack much of a punch, it is a blast to shoot (pun intended)!!!  Today’s post will be short, sweet, and to the point (kinda like the .22LR cartridge itself!).   We are dedicating this post to all things .22 caliber!!  We will tell you all about the different types of .22 ammo that is out there and their purposes.  We will also give you a little peak at some of the firearms we have that we like to play with when it comes to plinking with .22’s!!!

The .22 caliber cartridge is one of the most popular rounds on the market today.  So popular that, there was a time in which stores had to limit the number of boxes per customer to make it fair to all of you late arrivals!!!  It may seem that this round is only used for practice and plinking, but several of the .22 versions are used for many different reasons.  The following list is as complete as we can think of that covers the world of .22’s:

  • .22LR – .22 Long Rifle is the most common of the .22’s and is most commonly referred to simply as “.22;” is used for hunting small game, sport shooting, and plinking
  • .22 Long – .22 Long is the same length of the .22LR but is loaded with a lighter bullet; has similar uses to the .22LR
  • .22 Short – .22 Short is most commonly used in pocket pistols and revolvers
  • .22 WMR – .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire is used for hunting small game including but not limited to rabbits, groundhogs, prairie dogs, foxes, raccoons, and some coyotes
  • .22 Hornet – .22 Hornet rounds are used most often for competition shooting as these .22 rounds are considerably more powerful than any other .22 round
  • .22 Spitfire – .22 Spitfire is one of the only variations of the .22 that has the potential to be used for military purposes
  • .22TCM – .22 Tuason Craig Micromagnum is a variant of the .22 that actually has a 9mm case that is necked down to accommodate a .22 caliber bullet; this round is to be used with high-capacity semi-automatic firearms and has the capability to fit inside a standard 9mm magazine
