Welcome back you wacky buckaroos!!! It’s been a while since we were able to talk to you guys about all of our favorite topic?!?!?!?!? GUNS!!!!!! Well….we’re back and we have a load of new posts to share with you!! As always we will present to you guys the ins and outs, and try to provide some pics to go along with all of these pesky words!!! So….without any further adieu…..
One of the most venerable platforms in firearms today is the AR (Armalite Rifle). Always a favorite of PSA, the AR platform has been copied by almost all firearms companies that manufacture rifles chambered in the 5.56 NATO cartridge. One of the most interesting adaptations of the AR platform is the AR pistol. This wonderful little doo-hickey is actually made to fit in one hand and shoot like a pistol, but offer shooters the capability to discharge 5.56 NATO rounds!!! As you can see from the picture above (and below), the AR pistol looks small, but will pack quite a punch!!! Most AR Pistols come with a rail system (either picatinny or keymod) that will allow shooters to attach any glass, optics, or tactical accoutrements they’d prefer.
As always, just a little history behind the development of this little bugger… Since the passage of The National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA), any rifle with a shoulder stock and barrel less than 16 inches in length (and 26 inches overall) will be deemed to be a “short barreled rifle” (SBR) and require a citizen to fill out a BATFE Form 4 and pay a $200 NFA Tax Stamp. Back in those days, $200 was quite the sum of money, and these tax stamps and paperwork requirements served as a wonderful gun control measure. In addition, these requirements forced gun owners to become more responsible. The waiting process for the BATFE Form 4 usually takes upwards of a couple months for approval…..If you’re like me, you’re thinking: “That’s a looooooong time to wait for a piece of paper that says you can possess a firearm that you have to buy in order to fill out the paperwork!!!”
The AR Pistol is a firearm platform that basically allows gun owners to circumvent that NFA requirement. The AR Pistol allows shooters to have the capability of owning a firearm with the same size, weight, and maneuverability of an SBR without suffering through the paperwork, red-tape, and $200 for a tax-stamp. The AR Pistol can be found in a number of different cartridge applications (.22LR, 9mm, and .40ACP), but most commonly in 5.56 NATO (at the end of the post we will provide links to some manufacturers that offer AR Pistols). Thanks to one of PSA’s favorite gun manufacturers, SIG Sauer, we now also have the option of having an arm brace that will attach to the stock of your AR Pistol in order to further ease operation. Below, we will show you a couple of pictures that illustrate how these arm braces make shooting these puppies a breeze!
Although this may seem as though this firearm may be the “be all, end all,” understand you guys, that this platform does have it’s own set of shortcomings. One of the most glaring detractors to this type of firearm is it’s size (which is kind of crazy as its’ size is one of its most attractive benefits!!!). Having the shorter barrel will result in the firearm having a shorter gas system, which in-turn results in a shorter gas cycle. This will most likely be displayed by louder shooting coupled with more recoil. If this doesn’t bother you, then this platform may be the perfect fit for you!!!
***If you are unfamiliar with this type of firearm (or any other type) and would like to know more about their uses, utility, and features, PSA strongly suggests that you find and enroll in a comprehensive and thorough firearms safety course. Responsible gun ownership and operation is of paramount concern for PSA…and it should be for you too!!!!!
